A Berkeley Daily: Skull, Studio, Berkeley
4" x 7", Oil on canvas on board, Sold
I have never been drawn to painting skulls and always wondered what was the attraction to a subject so morbid. My neighbor, Tana Lehr, at Studio Rasa brought this in, I set up the composition for a monochromatic painting, sat down and painted. As the painting developed, I began to understand a little about vanitas, a genre containing symbols of death or change as a reminder of their inevitability - not a morbid subject after all.
