Shadows contain a lot of information. Studying them helps to see their particular color and how they influence the subject. In this case, I was most fascinated by the violet.

I like to paint what I see. During the process of looking intently, the world opens in new ways: that which is ordinary and everyday becomes a fascination with no real need to invent the abstract - it's already here!

After a visit to the Guggenheim in Bilboa, I traveled to the northern coast of Spain - a stunningly beautiful setting - and stayed in the tranquil town of Bermeo. How odd to discover that the serenity had not always been this way: nearby was the town of Guernika, otherwise known as Guernica. Sometimes we do strange things to one another. I chose to paint.

Thanks to Tana Lehr, one of my neighbors at Studio Rasa, who brought me a whole collection of her favorite objects to use as subjects for painting.

This painting was from my recent painting residency at Cill Rialaig on the west coast of Ireland, near Waterville and just south of Dingle. This particular view was from immediately outside the door of the cottage where I was staying. Nice view, quiet location and a wonderful time for painting and reflection.
